FRIDAY FIVE - FUNNY PAPERS

I got to do the Friday Five this week!

After an exhausting election here in the states it's time for some spirit lifting! Join me with a nice cup of tea or coffee or cocoa and let's sit back and read the Funny Papers!

1. What was your favorite comic strip as a child?

There were a lot I really loved including the usual suspects from Peanuts and Beetle Bailey, but this one,

Johnny Hart's Wizard of ID made me laugh every week!

2. Which comic strip today most consistently tickles your funny bone?

Opus and all the other folks in Bloom County by Berkeley Breathed.

(....and Jerry Van Amerongen's Ballard Street always cracks me up too)

3. Which Peanuts character is closest to being you?

That would be Sally, even though I don't have a big brother.

4. Some say that comic strips have replaced philosophy as a paying job, so to speak. Does this ring true with you?

I would agree somewhat with this. Considering that the majority of the idea buying public no longer has the attention span, much less the time to read Spinoza, Camus, Neitzche, Hegel, Descartes, or Kant and the others. My improv teacher used to tell us that it actually takes more talent to convey an idea in fewer words than in lots. In fact, he used to say this to me in particular quite often, for some reason. At any rate, a first rate philosophy needs to be looked at from all sides which takes longer than a six panel strip, though the strip can successfully impart it's through line.

5. What do you think the appeal is for the really long running comic strips like Blondie, Family Circle, Dennis the Menace as some examples?

I think they hearken back to simpler, sweeter days that we seem to have lost. I chalk this up to simple nostalgia.

Bonus question: Which discontinued comic strip would you like to see back in print?

Dear Gary Larson, Please......New Far Side cartoons. I want more. MORE!!!!!

oh yeah, the FAR SIDE. My brother's favorite. I wish that one would still be around too. You know, we don't read the funnies so much any more. I think FAR SIDE and PEANUTS are gone, and others that we enjoyed too.

Total agreement on the Far Side. I have some tattered ones I have been dragging around from office to office for years!

We are all so in synch it's scary, there must be someone somewhere who didn't love The Far Side!
Actually, in some papers, like my local one, they are re-running old Peanuts strips!

I like The far Side but it's Dilbert who speaks to my soul. I mean, is that not reality?
